The Samsung UN46B8500 46-Inch 1080p HDTV is worth to consider LED HDTV to buy. It offers premium quality experience at a decent price. However, do bear in mind that most LED HDTVs are costlier as compared with their LCD counterparts. Unless the budget allows, having an LCD instead of an LED might not seem like a bad option as well.

The first generation of LCD TV sets were back-lighted by a series of cold-cathode fluorescent tubes, which produce a white light. Each "pixel" or "picture element" that makes up a TV picture is spot on the display with three microscopic filters that produce the primary TV colors: red, green, and blue (RGB).

The color TV picture is then created by adjusting the transparency of the LCD element that controls the light passing through each of the filters in each of the pixels that make up the entire picture. For a typical HDTV picture, there are 1080 lines of pixels, each with 1920 pixels per line - a total of over 2 million pixels in the picture. Each pixel has three filters, and must be controlled individually to create a single frame of a TV picture, which refreshes at a rate of either 120 Hz, or 240 Hz, depending on the model. The notation Hz refers to "Hertz", which is a measure of the number of "cycles per second"  - 1 Hz is equal to 1 cycle per second.
