The UN46D6500 joins Samsung's line of intelligent 3D/high-definition video devices offering a host of features that were, at one time, found only in the high-end of the home entertainment spectrum. For example, it is a network-centric home video device. Built into the software that makes it a smart device is not only WiFi capability, but also DLNA capability. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certification means that any device that is DLNA-certified will interface and work with any other DLNA-certified device. This gives Samsung a double advantage in this increasingly network-centric world where access to the Internet is a necessity.

One cannot imagine a video device that is not capable of interfacing with the Internet either through WiFi or DLNA connection or a very simple RJ-45 wired-connection because home video displays are rapidly becoming not only the center of one's home entertainment center, but also of one's social networking. Certainly, one can use a laptop with either a wired connection or a WiFi connection through a router, but why would one do that when an HDTV with network ability is availableall In the case of the UN46D6500, Samsung's 46-inch high-definition video system, one does not have to do so because the it is network ready.

Because it comes with WiFi and DLNA capability built in, one has the option of using devices that recognize either standard, so that it is fairly easy to interface each device, just by following the instructions on any of the peripherals one chooses. Samsung also makes it easy to interface high-definition devices because it offers four HDMI connectors through which one can quickly interface a blu-ray player or a high-definition DVD player. Plus, the UN46D6500 has three USB connectors so that one can interface just about any intelligent device with your system, including a high-end sound system that features 5.1 surround sound.

That the UN46D6500 is a major-league video device is easy to see not only from its built-in networking capability, but also from the fact that it is also 3D-capable, right from the box. Although one does have to purchase the 3D glasses separately, when one does one will find that images literally leap from the screen with clarity, great color saturation and contrast. One of the sure giveaways is the 50,000:1 contrast. That contrast offers shades of black and white do not see elsewhere in very subtle gradations. It also means that the color saturation and color gamma is likely to be high.

Note, too, the standard resolution of the UN46D6500. It runs at 120 Hz resolution or twice as fast as standard LCD screens. There is a good reason for this. At a standard 60 Hz resolution, each eye sees a standard 15 frames per second. This means that everything on screen looks "normal." However, if you try to push things to 3D, you begin to run into problems, even if the video device runs at native 1080p high-definition mode. If you were to try to push an LCD device at 60 Hz into 3D mode, you run into such items as video artifacts as the screen doesn't quite clean up quickly enough and outlines tend to blur.

By moving to 120 Hz resolution, you are effectively doubling the video rate per eye so that for each cycle, your eye sees or would see two images if you were not also using "active shutter" 3D glass technology. With "active shutter" technology, your right eye, for example, sees a brand new image whose blacks are enriched and whose colors are also pumped up. Meantime, your left eye, though you don't see it or know it, is shutdown and kept in the dark by the "active left shutter" or eyeglass frame. And, almost as soon as your right eye has seen and registered the enhanced image, the right "active shutter" lens goes dark and your left eye gets an enhanced image.

Because this is operating at twice normal vision speed, you do not notice the changes and because each lens presents a slightly different angle of the same view the result is clean 3D video as images have distinct outlines and actions sequences are not blurry. It's a very good system that works well.

Indeed, not only does it enhance 3D imagery, but, in many cases 2D imagery is also enhanced at darks and are richer and fuller thanks to the high contrast levels, and colors are brighter as this system also enhances color imagery.

As an high-definition television device, the Samsung is among the best not only because it is "smart" but also because it runs at native HDTV mode. It also allows you to interface up to four HDMI peripherals such as blu-ray and DVD players, as well as high-definition sound.

All of this is part of a high-level marketing battle that is now taking place between the traditional market leader, Sony and others such as Samsung and even Toshiba that are offering everything that Sony offers, including specialized apps, social networking and more, to determine who, ultimately will lead the HDTV market into the last half of the second decade of the 21st century.
